Though details of the arrest are scanty, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has confirmed that the suspect was arrested as he tried to flee the scene.

Close to 550 students out of the 815 who stay at the university are still unaccounted for with reports indicating that there are still exchanges of gunfire.

Nkaissery said the attackers shot dead two guards as they burst their way into the university at around 5:30am but were repelled by other guards and police, forcing them to retreat to the student hostels.

In an earlier statement, Inspector General Joseph Boinett had said police that KDF had cordoned off the institution when they arrived and are combating the gunmen in efforts to rescue hostages.
